Lives of the City

For thousands of years human beings
have gazed at the moon, peering into
the night to search the heavens
for clues that might reveal the
mysteries of life on our own planet.

Timeless eons ago, a fragile membrane
encircled a cluster of primordial ingredients:
the first living cell from which all life evolved was born.

Mankind stepped from the realm of mere reflex
and uncertain survival and proceeded
to plant his cities all over the world.
Â
Â
The city is both a place and a process.
It is the physical environment that we
have constructed, layer upon layer,
to shelter our families and our work
